116- I pushed in because they were discussing the Holiday program our school will be having at the end of the month. The students had a meeting to discuss their ideas and decided on doing American Sign Language. I suggested that we have the students dictate an email to write to the head of American Sign Language at the University of Buffalo, to see if we could have a student or professor come in and help us make sure the sign language is correct.
I love the way this section of the room looks in 116 |
120- I pushed in and worked with small groups on winter scenes. They will be making drawings of each season and then they'll have to use sequencing skills to put them in the correct order. We looked at winter scenes and talked about how the colors aren't always what you expect. Snow, for example, changes color depending on the time of day, the color of the sky, and whether it's in a shadow or not. The sky changes depending on the weather or time of day, as well, and it can cast a glowing pink over the snow. I asked them why the snow looks different and one student suggested that it's because the snow comes from water and water is blue, so snow is sometimes blue. The other students agreed that it makes sense. :)
102- Today was our last day for their self-portraits. I had the group critique the portraits and mention one adjective to describe the word. They loved it and were throwing out every complimentary word they could think of at first, but it became increasingly difficult as we went through the many students. This was a good exercise in synonyms. Next time, they will write the adjective used to describe their portrait right on their portrait and we will be ready to move onto the next project!
104- At our design team meeting this morning, we talked about how the kindergarteners need to build up their fine motor skills. Drawing is the perfect technique for this. I took half of the class and we worked on observational drawing. It was surprising to see some of the students pick up on it so easily. I think that the littlest ones don't have their symbols for drawing things memorized yet, so they are more free to draw what they actually see. I want to continue this for one more period, at least, because I think it's really good for them. I'm going to lay out a few items next time and let them draw what interests them.
