The kindergarteners from 104 came in after that and we continued working on their self-portraits. At the end of the class, we were able to view and informally critique each other's progress so far.
Mrs. Bennett's pre-k came in and we had a whirlwind class. The day before, Mrs. Bennett, Ms. Cich and I critiqued the portraits and divided the students into groups. One group was finished or on the right track, so Mrs. Bennett worked with them. A second group was heading in the right direction but needed more focus, so Ms. Cich took that group. I worked with the group with the least representational work. We were able to catch up most of the group this way. There are still a few students who are struggling with the idea of drawing their faces, so we'll keep practicing and I know it will come with time.
After that, Ms. Hernandez's pre-k class came to the studio. We continued with the loose parts faces.
I finished the day with 118. The students finished their self-portraits, then did a compare and contrast with their finished pieces in pairs.
In other news, I've figured out our new printer and our new book binding machine and, as a result, I've created the first of many books from School #33 students. Saving the original drawings for our exhibit at the Albright-Knox, this book features color copies of the work the second graders created last year after seeing the work of Alberto Rey at the Burchfield and being visited by the Buffalo Niagara Riverkeepers. It's an informative guide to the animals of our community.
I showed it to my now-third graders and they informed me that it simply HAS to go in our school library. I want to make a copy for the Riverkeepers and a copy for the Burchfield-Penney, as a thank-you from our school, and a copy for the Valley Center, as they take care of "our" nature trail.
