108, first grade. I was working with the girls on their evil people story, when a very excited little girl came over to show me what the block group was working on. Roshelys placed the blocks in such a way that they formed the number eight. She was very excited about this and wanted me to take a photograph of it. (The students have figured out that I will praise creativity and reward them with photographing their work and giving them attention, so they are becoming very interested in my presence in the classroom.)
I loved her number eight and asked the group what other numbers they could create. Soon we had all of the numbers from zero to ten. This was unexpected and such an awesome display of the power of the Reggio Approach.
This was the original number one, but the students felt it was incomplete. They tried to fill a gap with different shapes and ended up with the second version of number one.
